Module 01 · 7 lessons

Your toolkit, and how to get every piece of it free

Day 0

Every tool used anywhere in this course is set up here, on day zero, before the clock starts. Each one comes with the exact steps to get it without paying, and the reason it was chosen over the alternatives. Nothing in this course assumes you have a licence, a laptop from your employer or a card that works online. Where a tool genuinely is not free, that is said plainly and a free stand in is given that produces work your department will accept. Do this module in one evening and you will never lose an afternoon to a download again.

Module 02 · 5 lessons

The topic, and the question underneath it

Days 1 to 2

More dissertations are lost here than anywhere else, and the loss is invisible for weeks. A topic that is too big, or that needs data you will never get, does not fail on day two. It fails on day forty, when there is no time left to change it. This module ends with a question you can defend and a concept note your supervisor can approve, and it deliberately spends the first day trying to talk you out of your own idea.

The proposal that gets approved first time

Days 2 to 3

A proposal is not a small dissertation. It is an argument that this study is worth doing, can be done by you, and will produce an answer. Supervisors reject proposals for a small and predictable set of reasons, and every one of them is avoidable in a day. By the end of this module your chapter one exists, your conceptual framework is drawn, and your proposal has been attacked by a hostile reader before a real one sees it.

The literature review, with sources that exist

Days 3 to 6

This is the module where students get caught. Ask an AI assistant for a literature review and it will hand you fluent prose citing papers that were never written, and supervisors have learned to check. The method here is the opposite: you find real papers first, you read them, and the assistant only ever works on text you have actually put in front of it. It is slower to describe and much faster to do. By the end of this module chapter two exists, argues rather than lists, and every reference in it is real.

Module 05 · 4 lessons

Methodology you can defend

Days 7 to 8

Chapter three is the chapter examiners attack, because it is the one that decides whether your findings mean anything. Every choice in it needs a reason, and the reason has to be a methodological one rather than because my supervisor said so. This module writes the chapter and, more importantly, arms you with the justification for every line in it. It also settles your sample size with arithmetic instead of a guess.

Module 06 · 4 lessons

Collecting data, and getting it into a file that will not fight you

Days 8 to 9

The gap between a good instrument and a usable dataset is where a surprising number of dissertations quietly break. Data typed the way it felt natural to type it cannot be analysed, and fixing that afterwards takes longer than collecting it did. This module covers getting responses in, entering them correctly the first time, cleaning what arrives, and handling interview recordings without spending three days typing.

Module 07 · 5 lessons

Analysis in Excel, SPSS or R, and knowing what the output means

Days 9 to 11

You do not need to be a statistician. You need to run the right test, read the right number, and be able to say what it means in a sentence. That is a much smaller skill than it sounds, and it is entirely learnable in three days. This module chooses your tests from your objectives first, then gives you two routes to run them: click by click in SPSS or its free equivalent, or as one reproducible script in R. Take whichever route you chose on day zero and skip the other, losing nothing. Everything after that, turning output into the sentences chapter four is made of, is identical either way.

Module 08 · 4 lessons

Chapters four and five, written in your own voice

Days 12 to 13

Chapter four presents. Chapter five explains. Students collapse the two and lose marks in both, because a findings chapter full of interpretation has nothing left for the discussion, and a discussion that repeats the findings adds nothing. This module keeps them separate, ties every finding back to the literature you reviewed in Module 4, and writes the abstract last, in fifteen minutes, which is the only sensible time to write it.

Module 09 · 5 lessons

The Word document, built properly

Day 13 to 14

This is the module nobody teaches and everybody needs. Two full days disappear here for most students, spent renumbering tables by hand, fighting page numbers that will not go Roman then Arabic, and rebuilding a table of contents that keeps breaking. None of that is necessary. Word will do all of it automatically if you set the document up correctly, and the setup takes about forty minutes. Everything in this module is done through styles, which is the single idea that makes the difference, and every step works in the free routes from Module 1.

Module 10 · 4 lessons

Integrity, similarity, and surviving the defence

Day 14

The last day decides whether the previous thirteen count. This module covers the three things that actually sink finished dissertations: a similarity score nobody understands, work that cannot be shown to be the student's own, and a defence the student walked into unprepared. None of the three is about luck. Similarity is caused by a small number of writing habits. Ownership is protected by one working method. And a viva asks a predictable set of questions that you can answer in advance.
